In his first commissioned work for public space, Joe Hamilton directly confronts the local art historical context. From digitized representations of historic surfaces, Joe Hamilton created a series of space and image abstractions. Embedded in the web app “Appraisal“, it requires the viewer to rate each work to carry on with the exhibition. The interface loosely resembles the online dating app Tinder. This simplification of complex cultural gestures opposes the complexity of his visual work. By interweaving visual references to architecture, painting and nature, Joe Hamilton creates representations of immaterial, hyper-connective spaces as they are only to be imagined in our increasingly networked societies.
